American entertainment has been down in the dumps for years. For a variety of reasons, mostly cultural, certain entertainment has been gate-kept and its distribution limited. We can be sold a gory marathon of death and destruction in film or video games, but put an attractive woman in a skin-tight outfit amid the carnage and you attract the ire of the most insufferably worthless chatterboxes in society.
At Stratum Press, we’re tired of knowing what kinds of entertainment works and seeing people refuse to make it in order to appease penniless prudes and self-appointed arbiters of moral certitude. Our goal is simple: entertain.
With Hotel Erebus, we delivered a novella about a man struggling with his faith and faced with the demons of his past. With nothing but grit, determination, two pistols with infinite ammo and a beautiful woman on his arm, he opted to fight his way out of Hell. In CLEAVE, the titular barbarian travels across the mythical world of Estara to stop a death cult from birthing a dragon that would sanctify the world. The next book is in progress and ready to be shown.
My third novella is called NECROPOLICE: BLOODSTORM. It’s an obvious love letter to schlocky horror films from the 60s to the 90s, anime and anime-inspired shows like Aeon Flux and even video games like Resident Evil, Bloodborne and Castlevania. Anybody who grew up on Full Moon Pictures movies like Subspecies and Trancers will be familiar with the aesthetic tone.
Necropolice: Bloodstorm introduces audiences to the character Ursula Graves who is an augmented human being living on a strange Earth-like world and within a massive sprawling urban enclave called the Necropolis where teeming millions live lives of perpetual repentance for their sins. The Necropolice are an organization that fights supernatural crimes and enforce divine law. Ursula is a law enforcement agent that is sent to deal with a variety of problems that keep the average citizen safe and allows them to live lives of piety and peace.
In the novella—which is looking to be around 170 pages; the first draft is nearly done—Ursula Graves is tasked with investigating a missing Necropolice agent who is suspected to have been last seen in a remote pastoral town called Belarad. Belarad is the home of people called Nehlim, a godly race of deathless humanoids who choose to live without modern conveniences which allows them to be more pure in their faith.
When Ursula arrives, she discovers that a bizarre plague has overtaken the town and turned many of the residents into insatiable beasts. In order to complete her mission, she’ll have to solve the mystery of the missing Necropolice agent and deal with the demons of her own past.
Necropolice: Bloodstorm is a fast-moving thrill ride of a horror action-adventure with guns, motorcycles, monsters and sex appeal with a bit of pathos among the kinetic cartharsis. The first draft of the book is near completion and will be ready to ship once the campaign ends and monies are transferred. I’ve already done the math on the costs for printing the books and associated materials. The merch assets are ready to go to print.
For those that missed the previous two books, I’ll be offering an anthology called “Smoke, Steel and Shadows” that combines, Hotel Erebus, CLEAVE and Necropolice: Bloodstorm in one big collection.
There will also be a full-color book of conceptual designs and promotional images that weren’t used for the Kickstarter, as well as a “sketch” gallery book of black and white images that show Ursula and other Necropolice visual ideas. A set of stickers and a bookmark will also be available. A digital soundtrack will be included with all of the reward tiers.
If you want everything from the campaign, it’s in one reward tier at $100.
The book has many inspirations. You can see some of them below.
If we want new entertainment that appeals to us and not special interest groups, we have to make it. I’m doing my part! Help me to help you!
